General Information
Ancient yet cosmopolitan, Izmir has long been known as ‘the Pearl of the Aegean’. Dominating the Gulf of Izmir in south west Turkey, it is the gateway to the Aegean Coast, serving and delighting holiday visitors from all over the world. Izmir is the country’s third largest city and second busiest port. Its historical importance should not be under-estimated, as the city is believed to date back to the third century B.C. But Izmir is also very much a tourist centre, known for its hospitality, wealth of accommodation, excellent shopping facilities, nightlife and proximity to some of the best beaches.
